Possession of the Songbird

Chapter 1: ???

“I wait for you, precious one.”

Yugi looked around in fear. He couldn’t see anything through the darkness.

“W-who’s there?” He asked fearfully.

“Don’t fear me. I will never hurt my little one.”

“What do you want?” Yugi tried to back away, only to have a pair of arms wrap around his waist. He let out a cry of terror and tried to break free from the arms.

“Hush, beautiful one, hush. There is nothing to fear. I am not here to harm you.”

Yugi relaxed in his arms, but then turned to try to see his face. His eyes widened when he was staring into crimson eyes. The other seemed to be in awe as well. He reached out and gently caressed Yugi’s cheek.

“You are so much more beautiful up close.” He whispered in awe.

A hot blush lit up Yugi’s cheeks. The other chuckled softly and dragged his thumb across the crimson hue.

“Beautiful, simply beautiful.”

“W-who are you?” Yugi finally stuttered out.

The other pulled him until their chests were touching. Yugi blushed darker and hid his face in the man’s chest. The man seemed to have none of that for he pulled Yugi back so he could see him. He then lent down and whispered in Yugi’s ear,

“I am whoever you want me to be, my little one.”

“Recess time!”

“Come on, let’s go!”

Yugi pulled a deck of cards out his backpack as the others dashed pass him. All didn’t spare the small boy a second glance as he started to build a house of cards. His eyes were distant, almost as if he didn’t notice the world around him.

“Hey, Yugi!”

The house shook and then crumbled. Yugi sighed and looked up at the person who was talking. He recognized him as one of his classmates. He was casually twirling a basketball on his middle finger and grinning at Yugi.

“Why don’t you come out and play basketball?” He suddenly asked.

Yugi blinked, but then let a nervous smile play across his lips. “Oh no, I can’t. My team would just lose.”

His classmate seemed to think for a second before nodding. “Yeah, that’s true. I guess I’ll catch you around then.”

Silence filled the classroom once more. Yugi quickly picked up the fallen cards until they were back into a neat deck. He shuffled it unconsciously, trying to think of what to do next. His eyes then widened when he remembered his treasure.

“That’s right, I can always work on my treasure,” He spoke aloud. Yugi then reached into his backpack and pulled out a golden box.

Yugi held the box with the utmost care. He placed it on his desk and caressed the eye of Ra.

This box holds my treasure and a riddle. “Can be seen, but you haven’t seen it” what could that even mean? If only you looked inside.

Yugi was just about to lift the lid, but then it was snatched away. He looked up in surprise and nearly gasped. Honda and Jou had his treasure! Honda carelessly held the box in the air. Yugi stared wide-eyed at the other teenagers. How could he get his treasure back now?

“Yugi! What are you doing in this dark room? You should be outside!” Honda said sarcastically. “Hey, this must be your ‘precious’ treasure!”

The two suddenly ran to the entrance of the classroom and started to toss the box back and forth. Yugi gasped and went in between the two so he could catch his treasure. But his height, or lack thereof, didn’t allow his fingers to even graze the golden box.

“Please give it back to me! Give it back!” Yugi cried as he continued to jump for his treasure.

Jou caught it once more and held it up in the air. Yugi stared at the box longingly. He just wanted them to go away and leave him alone. He never bothered them or tried to hurt them in anyway. Why did they have to pick on him?

“Quit jumping around like a girl, Yugi!” Jou snapped at him while he casually tossed the box into the air and caught it.

Yugi watched the box intently, his eyes filled with fear. He didn’t know how much damage the box could take. He never dropped it and treated it with care. If Jou dropped it, would the box break?

“I’ll teach you to act like a man!” Jou boomed.

Oh, that’s why they were doing it. They thought he needed to act like a man. Yugi held back a sigh. Why did they have to do this to him?

“Just give me my box back!” Yugi cried once more.

Jou held it higher to steer Yugi from getting it. “Look, I’ll give you your box back if you try with all your might to get it.”

“But I hate fighting!” Yugi yelped, his voice rising.

Jou flinched and slapped his hands over his ears. “Damn it! You’re so loud!”

Yugi sighed and held out his hand. “Just please give me my box!”

“Not a chance!” Honda announced, leaning down so he was right in Yugi’s face. Yugi bit his lip to hold back a scream. He just wanted back what was rightfully his!

“So what’s in the box?” Jou suddenly murmured. Yugi watched him shake the box slightly. “Well, only one way to find out.”

“Y-you can look, but be careful! It’s extremely valuable!” Yugi said as he moved pass Honda.

Jou barely nodded, but didn’t try to meet Yugi’s gaze. The lid gave a slight pop when Jou lifted it. He gave a quick look inside and then slapped it shut.

“That’s dumb! Here, Honda!” Jou threw the box over his shoulder carelessly. Honda went to grab it, but another hand reached out and snatched it.

“If you guys think it is so lame then give it back!” Anzu snapped.

“Mazaki!” Honda and Jou shouted.

“Anzu!” Yugi felt instant relief. Anzu had been his friend since elementary school. She cared for him and didn’t mind playing games even though she would lose.

“You are the dumb ones for picking on those weaker than you! Now beat it!” She hissed.

Yugi held back a sigh at that. Yes, he was always the weak one. The one who needed someone to back him up. He couldn’t even stand up to a paper bag! He’d probably trip over it and lose.

“We’ll be back you damned woman!” Jou hissed.

“Beat it!” Anzu growled once more.

When they were gone, Anzu placed Yugi’s treasure back on his desk. “Here you go Yugi, your precious item.”

Yugi sat down in his desk and held the box. He gently ran his thumb across the eye of Ra. This box was very precious to him and not just for what was inside. He knew there was more to it then what it seemed.

Those dreams…they didn’t come until I was given this box. Who is that man and what does he want with me? Yugi forced his blush down when the thought of last night’s dream. Usually he would be lying in an extravagant bed and surrounded with hundreds of games. The man would usually just be coming in, or was in the corner watching him. He never saw anything more than his crimson eyes and pale arms. He heard him speak many times though.

“My precious one.”

Why did he call him that? He never was considered precious.

“You’re so beautiful…”

Then there was that. How can a boy be beautiful? As flattered as he was, shouldn’t he be handsome?

“Yugi?” Anzu spoke. “Yugi!”

Yugi broke away from his thoughts and blinked at Anzu. “Yes, Anzu?”

Anzu smiled and gently flicked Yugi’s forehead. “You need to pay more attention.”

Yugi laughed softly. “Sorry Anzu. But that was awesome! You just said a few words and they were gone.”

She slid into the other desk and rested her elbow on his desk. “Don’t flatter me, I just saw a nice guy being picked on! It’s wrong for them to throw around your treasure like that.”

Anzu then growled into her palm. “All the guys in this class are perfect reflections of those two! This guy wanted the girls to play basketball, and I thought it was weird. It turns out they wanted us to be in a certain position to make a basket! Basketball isn’t for looking up girl’s skirts!”

Yugi’s face suddenly took on a scarlet hue. “Y-yeah…basketball.” Certain images passed through his mind and made him blush darker.

“Yugi, what are you thinking?”

“Umm…nothing?”

Anzu rolled her eyes and then looked at the golden box. “Yugi, what’s in this thing anyways.”

Yugi’s blush faded away and he smiled. “Well, I guess you can see, but you have to keep it a secret!”

Anzu nodded. “Of course.”

Yugi reached out and lifted the lid. Anzu let out a gasp when she looked inside. The box was filled with golden puzzle pieces. But these pieces were not normal looking puzzle pieces. All were in different shapes or sizes. Anzu reached in and pulled out a piece.

“Wow! They’re so pretty!” Anzu cooed. “What are they part of, a puzzle?”

Yugi nodded. “Yep, it’s a puzzle! I don’t know what shape it will be though. In other words, it’s a thing that “can be seen, but you haven’t seen it”! I live in a game shop! There’s a whole bunch of exotic and unusual games for sale there, and I found this just gathering dust in a corner. Now, I think of the puzzle as a memento of my grandfather.”

Anzu gasped inwardly. Yugi’s grandfather died? I guess that’s why it’s so important to him. She felt worry for the smaller one. He was probably so sad since he was living alone.

Yugi bit his lip and caressed a piece of the puzzle. He felt something inside him stir before releasing a soft purr. Yugi didn’t understand the feelings deep inside him. They would always appear whenever he touched the puzzle. Usually they feelings would be adoration and complete happiness. Yugi smiled and dragged this thumb across the puzzle piece.

“The puzzle was found in the ruins of Egypt,” Yugi continued.

“Egypt?”

Yugi nodded. “Look! The box is engraved with strange symbols. I think I know what they mean.”

“What do they mean?”

“The person who completes this puzzle will have one wish granted! I know that’s what it says. Maybe that’s too fantastic, though…”

Anzu laughed softly and ruffled Yugi’s hair.

Yugi blushed and knocked the hand away. “Don’t tell anyone Anzu. It’s a secret, right?”

“I know that Yugi! I won’t tell a single soul! I know you’ll get that wish! Just keep at it and you will succeed!”

Yugi grinned and nodded. “Yeah, I’ll keep at it!”

He delved back into his thoughts. Gently, he placed the golden piece back. A feeling of sorrow and want passed through him. Yugi sighed and caressed a piece. The feeling changed into a deep want. He smiled and shut the lid. The feelings instantly disappeared.

“What is it anyways? Your wish, I mean,” Anzu asked and gave him a cheeky wink.

Yugi laughed and shook his head. “I can’t tell you. It’s an absolute secret.”

Anzu smiled and watched Yugi go back to caressing the eye on the golden box. Yugi, what ever your wish is…I know it will come true. I just know it.

“Crap, what a nosy woman…and that nerd!” Jou hissed. “Who’s picking on the weaker ones?”

Honda and Jou were walking down a hallway to recess. Both were too involved in their complaining to notice the tall and dark figure approaching them.

“Jou, that would be us,” Honda reminded.

Honda and Jou released a cry when they ran into a hard chest. They both stumbled back before catching themselves. Honda went to yell at the person, but was silent when he recognized the person. Jou seemed unaware of who the person was. If only he knew.

“What do you mean ‘picking on’?” The other growled, his eyes narrowed.

“I might’ve meant you! Move it!” Jou snapped.

Honda’s eyes widened and he slapped a hand over Jou’s mouth. “I…um…we-we didn’t mean anything!” He stuttered.

The other turned and gave the boys a hard look over his shoulder. “Bullying is wrong!”

Honda nodded quickly. “Y-yeah it is!”

He released a sigh of relief as he walked away. “Damn it, learn to pick your fights better, Jou! That’s the Demon of Morals, Ushio! He enforces the school rules! Don’t even think about mouthing off to him!”

Jou ripped Honda’s hand off his mouth when Ushio was gone. “That hurt, you jerk!”

“That was scary,” Honda murmured.

“Ushio! Someday I’ll fight you!” Jou hollered despite Honda’s murmur.

Honda sighed and kicked the wall beside him. “Now there’s nothing to do.”

Jou chuckled softly. “I know what will cheer you up. Guess what I have?”

“Hm? What do you have?”

Jou removed his hand from his pocket and showed him what was lying in his palm. It was a piece of the puzzle that had an eye engraved into it.

“What the…”

“I took this while looking at Yugi’s treasure,” Jou explained. “He didn’t notice, but the puzzle is useless without it! Without this piece, the puzzle becomes ‘it is a treasure, but now the treasure is lost’!”

Honda grinned. “That’s slick, Jounouchi-Kun!”

Jou turned towards the open window. “As for this thing…”

He threw the piece as hard as he could. It soared out the open window and it landed in the pool. Jou smirked triumphantly and turned away.

This ‘treasure stuff’…Yugi will never understand how fake it truly is.

The freedom bell echoed throughout the hallways. Teenagers bolted out the door and started to head for home. Yugi stayed behind the crowd to avoid being trampled. His schoolmates would probably use him as a mat if he tried to get ahead.

Yugi reached into his pocket and fisted one of the puzzle pieces. He immediately felt a sense of happiness and calm. Yugi couldn’t understand why he wanted to hold a piece of the puzzle, but he felt safe whenever he did. He felt as if nothing would harm him. Yugi’s teeth clamped down on his lip as he thought of the man inside his dreams. Why was he treating him as if he were a treasure? What if he just wanted to hurt him?

The feelings turned to worry and hurt. Yugi flinched and caressed the puzzle piece. A sense of forgiveness and calm filled his being.

“Hey, you’re Yugi-Kun, right?”

Yugi turned and saw a tall teenager leaning against the wall. His eyes held a glint of something Yugi couldn’t understand. A sense of apprehension and protectiveness filled him. He released the puzzle piece and gripped his backpack.

“Yes, I am.” Yugi replied.

“I’m Ushio and I’m a member of the Morals Committee. I’d like to ask you some questions.”

Yugi smiled and nodded. “Sure Ushio, ask away.”

He wasn’t aware of Ushio’s true nature. He never was told who was a bully until he was cornered by them. Yugi usually would find himself in a corner because of his kindness towards the bully. But Ushio was on the Morals Committee, so there was no way he could be a bully, right?

“Have you been picked on by anyone in your class?”

Immediately, Jou and Honda appeared in his mind. They weren’t bulling him, right? “N-no…I haven’t.”

Yugi took a step back, but Ushio spoke again. “Hey, hold on! For the good of the school, you have to tell the truth. I guess I’ll have to investigate this!”

“But-but I-.” Yugi wondered if he should try to run. Ushio was so much bigger than him and he didn’t seem to be too safe.

“Don’t worry about it Yugi-Kun! Just consider me your paid bodyguard!” Ushio gripped Yugi’s shoulders and brought him closer. Yugi’s eyes widened and his body turned stiff.

“I really don’t need that,” Yugi whispered when Ushio released him. “Thanks anyway…bye.”

Heh, I found a good target! Ushio smirked and watched Yugi stumble away.

Yugi dug his hand back into his pocket. When he touched the piece, a sense of anger and protectiveness engulfed him. He was about to release the piece, but the feelings changed to sorrow. Yugi gripped the piece better and the feeling changed to pure happiness.

Why do I feel this way? Yugi thought. Why do I feel this whenever I touch a piece of the puzzle? I can’t be going insane…can I?

Yugi caressed the puzzle piece one last time as he approached the house. He felt a deep sense of sadness before he released the puzzle piece.

“I’m home!” Yugi cheered as he approached the entrance to the Kame Game Shop.

“Yugi!” A voice called.

Yugi turned and then smiled when he realized the person. “Anzu!”

“It’s been awhile since I’ve came over to play,” She said happily.

Yugi’s smile widened and he nodded excitedly.

Anzu felt horrible since Yugi was living alone. He probably wanted some company and someone to play a game with him. After all, it had been awhile since she visited. It would be nice of her to play a few games and maybe help him with dinner.

“C’mon, let’s go!” Yugi said as he walked inside.
